S&W's South End

Fort Worth

South end staging on the S&W represents connections to Temple and Houston, TX. Out of stagin trains first enter Fort Worth, site of downtown yard. Above is a Google Earth look at Downtown Yard in Fort Worth. It is a jointly run yard and interchange point between BNSF and Union Pacific. The S&W has a live interchange with UP including a 3 track yard and a short UP main. North of downtown the main, paralleled by the UP main, crosses the Trinity River as it approaches Hodge Junction.

Hodge Junction

Hodge Junction was the point of origin for the FW&D line known today as BNSF Wichita Falls sub. Today its small yard is an interchange point and headquarters for the Fort Worth and Western Railway. Hodge Junction houses FW&W's engine facilities. Above is a sketch of the paint scheme for a FW&W EMD GP38. FW&W is just off the south end of BNSF North Yard. On the S&W it is represented by a 2 track interchange yard and a representation of FW&W's engine facility.

North Yard

North Yard is the operational center of the entire layout. Interchanges with UP and FW&W as well as switching locals for Saginaw, Decatur, and Bowie all run out of North Yard. Attebury Grain is yard side, and the Railhead industrial district is just off the north end of the yard. Railhead is represented on the S&W with two industries--P&O Cold Logistics and Evergreen Feeds. Above is a Google Earth shot of the south half of North Yard in Saginaw, TX. You can see the yard office and tower, RIP facilities, and engine servicing facilities as well as Attebury Grain Elevator, all of which appear on the S&W.

Saginaw

Saginaw is the location of the largest number of online industries. Modeled rail customers include Universal Forest Products, ADM, Koch Materials, Quality Carriers, Trinity Industries Rail Car Division, and more.

ADM Grain Elevator

The largest single industry on the layout is ADM's grain elevator in Saginaw. The Google Earth shot above shows the north grain elevaor in Saginaw. This facility was once the largest grain elevator under one leg in the world. It still holds the record as the largest in the state of Texas. I selectively compressed the model and it is still over 4 actual feet long (the prototype is over 1/4 mile long).
